MASALE BHAAT | MAHARASHTRIAN STYLE MASALE BHAAT | मसाले भात

Masale Bhaat is an authentic Maharashtrian dish.It is nothing but a rice spiced with very authentic maharshtrian spices and loaded with lots of vege’s.Here in this recipe of Masale bhaat I have used Indrayani Rice and Masoor dal or red lentils in combination.Generally Masale Bhaat is prepared with only Rice, but we in our family like it with some lentils added like toor dal, moong dal…The combination of rice and lentils is always fab and nutritious also.

  • 1 big potato diced in square cubes
  • 1 big tomato sliced vertically
  • 1 big onion sliced vertically
  • 1 cup cauliflower shallots
  • 1 medium sized capsicum diced vertically
  • ¼ cups green peas
  • 2-3 bay leaves
  • 3-4 green chillies sliced vertically
  • 7-8 cloves of crushed garlic
  • ½ inch of chopped ginger
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • ½ tsp mustard seeds
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • ½ – 1 tsp chilli powder ( as per your taste )
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp of khada masala powder
  • Chopped coriander leaves
  • Fresh curry leaves (it’s missing in my recipe)
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for cooking
  • About 4 or 3 ½ cup of luke warm water for cooking of rice (water quantity depands on which type of rice you are using.

METHOD :

  • First wash the rice and masoor dal properly and keep for draining.
  • Wash all the vegetables and keep ready.
  • In a pan add oil for heating.
  • Temper it with cumin seeds and mustard seeds.
  • Now add bay leaves to the tempering.
  • Saute it nicely.
  • Now add diced onions to the pan.
  • Saute till the onion turns golden brown.
  • Add all the vegetables to the pan now.
  • Give it a nice mix.
  • Add chilli powder, khada masala, coriander powder and turmeric.
  • Mix everything well.
  • Add washed rice and masoor dal to the mixture.
  • Saute it properly till all the masale’s get nicely coated to the rice and dal.
  • Now add required amount of water to the mixture.
  • Mix well.
  • Cover it with a lid so as to cook nicely.
  • If needed add required amount of water again.
  • Take care that we don’t want our rice to be mushy like khichdi bhaat…we need every strand of rice to look separate…so the right quantity of water is very essential for masale bhaat.
  • Cook it for next 10-15 minutes or till the rice and vege’s get cooked properly.
  • Your Masale Bhaat is ready to eat.
  • Serve it hot with Curd/Dahi,mango pickle,ghee and papad….
