Idli is one of the healthy traditional South Indian Breakfast.Idli is a steamed rice cake which is prepared from the fermented batter of rice and whole white lentils i.e.urad dal.
It is not only popular in India but also all over the world.Idli when eated with Sambhar is a healthy complete meal option.Also it is packed with all nutrients.It has carbohydrates,proteins,minerals,fibres and vitamins also.It is one of the most widely consumed breakfast.
Idli should be served with hot Sambhar and Coconut Chutney.
Here in this recipe we are preparing the Idli’s from Idli Rava which is made from the grains of rice.I find making the Idli’s directly from Idli Rava easier and quicker.Also the Idli’s become more fluffy and soft by this procedure.
Idli’s are prepared from soaked rice and urad dal mixture where the rice is coarsely grinded after soaking and is then mixed with the fine paste of soaked urad dal.Here the grinding of soaked rice is bit time consuming.But it depands on your choice which type you have to adopt.
Both the method of preparing Idli can be adopted.So lets have a quick start towards our Idli recipe.
IDLI | IDLI WITH IDLI RAVA

INGREDIENTS :
- 3 cups idli rava
- 1 cup urad dal/whole white lentils
- Water for soaking
- Salt to taste
- Oil for greasing idli plates
METHOD :
- Wash the idli rava and urad dal nicely.
- Soak the idli rava and urad dal separately in a bowl.
- The water should soak the idli rava and urad dal properly.
- Soak both of them for 4-5 hours.
- After proper soaking remove the excess water from idli rava slowly without disturbing the soaked idli rava.
- Also drain the water from the urad dal.
- Now grind the urad dal to a fine paste.
- Add water to the urad dal while grinding if required.
- Now mix both the soaked idli rava and grinded urad dal paste together.
- Keep the batter for fermentation overnight or for next 9-10 hours.
- After 9-10 hours the idli batter rises up.This shows that the batter has fermented nicely.
- Now add salt to the batter as per your taste.
- Give it a nice mix.
- In a steamer keep water to boil.
- Grease the idli plates with oil.
- Pour the idli batter into the idli plates.
- Keep this plates into the steamer and cover it with the lid properly.
- Let it steam for next 10-15 minutes.
- After 10-15 minutes put off the gas and let the idli’s get cooler.
- With the help of spoon remove the idli’s from the plates.
- Your Idli’s are ready to eat.
- Serve it hot with Coconut Chutney and hot Sambhar.
STEP BY STEP METHOD OF PREPARING IDLI | IDLI WITH IDLI RAVA :
- The water should soak the idli rava and urad dal properly.
